Boracay: Paradise Found 27Nov- 3rd December 2013

Please excuse my procrastination. I am being held up by school work and Team Fortress 2(whoever plays this, please comment and add me!). Here is the very much awaited Boracay post.

I remember, 2 weeks before I’m bound for Boracay,Typhoon Haiyan hit Philippines. I, like every other traveler, was worried out of my mind on what will become of my trip, since it was on the news that the typhoon did, indeed hit Boracay. I checked Tripadvisor several times, refreshing the page every 5 minutes to see updates on what the other travelers(who were already there) wrote about the situation. I also wrote several emails to the resort that I’m staying, and the staff have been really reassuring, telling me that they have not been really affected except for power outages.

I decided to just YOLO (with wit, since I bought travel insurance just in case. I don’t usually have the habit to buy travel insurance since I would rather spend those extra moolahs on the trip itself.) and go ahead with my trip.

BONUS JONAS: Something that happened in the Middle School:

Back in Secondary 1( Singapore’s equivalent for high school age), my school decided to change the uniform, and the new uniform came with ‘school shoes’ from Fila. So basically, everyone in my grade wears the same shoes. One day during music class(we were suppose to remove our shoes and leave it outside the music room), my godsis and I decided to go to the toilet together, and before going back into class, mess up everyone’s shoes while safekeeping our own in a corner. So yea, after music class was a disaster as everyone were suddenly wearing everyone’s shoes. It was hilarious and no one ever knew the culprits

The people I wanna tag are Bernie and Sylvia. Have fun!

No pain no gain weekend

Phew! What a weekend!

This whole weekend has just been so hectic, it’s even difficult to breathe.

So I went to tighten my braces again after a tuition class on Saturday, and gosh was it painful. It definitely wasn’t as painful as the very first time putting it on, but I haven’t experience this pain in a long time! So I went with pink and red this time, red for Chinese New Year, and pink for Valentine’s Day.

No filters = no fish

I need to get this out of my system.

ALL fishes need a filter. Whether you are keeping a SGD$2 Betta, or a ten grand Arowana, they all need filters!

8590505928_23dae4004c Platinum-Arowana

The reason for this is that a few close friends of mine have decided to go back to keeping fish. Take note of the words ‘go back’. This means that they have got fish keeping experience, and probably have got more experience than I do. I have to admit, although I have been keeping fishes for 2 years coming 3, I am still learning new things everyday.

I have committed the mistakes almost every fish keeper would have, from throwing fishes into a new tank, (although, the pet store is equally irresponsible for not telling me otherwise, and furthermore, encouraging me to do it. Yes, its great for sales, but just plain cruel to the fish, and for giving wrong information. I knew nothing about the Nitrogen cycle until when i woke up one day to cloudy water and half my fishes floating on the surface) to playing God by throwing in random medicine in hope that the fishes get better.

So when this supposedly more experienced friend, let’s name him A (because he’s evil, like “A” in “Pretty Little Liars”), decided to get a Betta, the same time as I do(since the aquarium disaster episode), I asked if he has cycled his tank. All he told me was: ” A betta doesn’t need a cycled tank, nor a filter. Just a bowl, since Bettas live in stagnant water and can even survive in drains” I was outraged! For a split moment, whatever he said actually made me question myself and my beliefs in fish keeping. After all, he has more experience than I do.

A week later, another mutual friend (let’s name him B), also an experienced keeper, decided to keep a Betta too. To my disbelief, he heeded A’s advice and just threw the poor fish into a less than a gallon tank, with the water only half filled (reason being that Bettas jump. Bettas are strong fishes, which can easily leap that distance, and furthermore, it is unfair to shortchange their living environment when they just want to get out of that filthy environment)! With no surprise there, no filter. At the same time, A decided to get a 1 Ft tank, cycle if for 2-3 days with conditioned water (note that there’s no beneficial bacterial used), and threw in a monster fish, a Polypterus Senegal.

I feel so bad for the fishes. Imagine living in such conditions. Although I have tried to convince them otherwise, but they stood their ground, that what they did was right. If I should make them live in a cupboard box. they will be ok, being provided with food and water, but will they be happy?

Truth be told, I find myself questioning myself, All those hours spent on forums and websites, painstakingly learning about water parameters like pH levels and gaseous names (I’m not a chemistry student) and making sure that the fishes that I keep have the right living conditions, waiting for weeks to months on end for the water to cycle, and all they do is plop the fish into aged water without filters, so much for ammonia and unstable temperatures.

Frankly speaking, I blame pet stores for not educating the public. Making money at the expense of lives. Oh, and don’t get me started on pet stores. They are just cruel! Have you seen the little containers that they use to keep Bettas? Some of these containers have so much filth in them that the water turned brown with little room to swim!! This however, isn’t the case just for Singapore, but also everywhere around the world! I have talked to people in the US, who have also complained about the living conditions of Bettas in Petsmart and Walmarts.

I sincerely urge people to read up and do their research. Came across this website which gives insightful and yet easy to understand information. A filter is essential in any aquarium. It is where the beneficial bacterial grows and without it, ammonia levels will get out of control, especially in a small tank.

Please don’t make the same mistakes as me, these are living creatures after all. Just because pet shops put Bettas in tiny ass containers without filters, does not mean Bettas are meant to live the rest of their lives in a tiny ass cesspit you call their home.

P/s: I do not hate A, we’re still friends. I just get very agitated when I see pet owners not giving their pets what’s best for them, even if it was within their means. Animal lover? 100% guilty as charged.

PADI Open Water Certification 11-13 July 2014

What a start to the new year!

I wish I can charm you by saying how magical the new year has been with the champagnes and the parties that will make Katy Perry blush, but no, I have to fall gravely ill, sort of.  A fever that wouldn’t go away, a throat that itches and yet hurts with every cough, and a nose that can never decide if it wants to get stuck or start running. I shall not get into the off-putting description, but if you are interested……….

email me, and I will give you up to the tiniest detail. Nah, I’m joking.

(I’m serious, email me)

First Ballet Class for 2015

How I Wish I could tell you that I have achieved a clean double pirouette or something, but that does not seem to be the case. Woke up with a cold and a scratchy throat, but still, I promised myself that I have to start the year right. Getting my attendance up, that is.

When i arrived at the studio, woah, the lobby of my dance school was just huddled with throngs of people. From young girls prancing around, to parents of said young girls trying to get attention of the receptionist. Even the floor space was congested. Everywhere on the floor were just legs, shoes and bags. Much to my surprise, there were a lot more people in my class than expected. After much gossips with my classmates, it was then I found out that there were some that came over from other classes, mainly from the Grade 5 progression class or something, which is mainly the open adult ballet class. Why the Grade 5s were with us, I have no idea, but I’m not complaining, since at last, there was a guy in our class! *squeals*

To tell you the truth, having a guy, donned in white shirt, black tights and black soft shoes in class, is quite a sight to behold! Not to put it in a bad way. The mentality of the male population in Singapore has always viewed Ballet as something feminine. Something they would not want to be seen doing or go near within a 10 foot radius, or it will be a shot to their masculinity. I have always preached that the manliest guys are guys who dance, but even my own boyfriend, beg to differ.

Nontheless, stretching has somehow been incorporated with barre work and I find myself having terrible back aches the very next day, woe is aging. The teacher these days seemed to be really into penchée and arabesques and anything back breaking.

Picture from google images

Picture from google images

Oh when will my toes ever point to the ceiling during a penchée??

That aside, I was really disappointed with my turns. 1 and 3/4 turns, and i find myself hopping around. It was never a problem for me, but now, I can only blame it on myself not feeling well.

Yet again, I see myself stumbling and copying others during petite allegro, which resulted in the teacher telling me that I’m not an octopus and that I only have 2 legs. But yet??? Readers who seem to excel in petite allegro, any tips? I have absolutely no problems in turns and adagio, but petite allegro is my kryptonite.

On another issue, my Hong Kong student has passed her AEIS Examination and have gotten into a local school! I’m a private tutor, yes, and seeing my students excel under my tutelage is one of the reasons I am still teaching, despite holding a full time job. This is her second time trying for the exam, since only the top 5% of the cohort gets to be accepted in local schools. This means that even if you passed the exam, it might not mean you will get in, unless, that is, you pass with colours flying into space!

I’m especially proud of her, and is great news to start the new year.
